Fauquier Hospital Pulmonary Function Lab offering FeNo

When you have difficulty breathing, nothing else matters. A relatively new test called fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) can help assess what’s causing the problem. Fauquier Hospital has recently begun offering the tes.

FeNO testing enables your doctors to evaluate inflammation in the lung’s bronchial tubes that makes it difficult to breathe. Nitric oxide gas is produced by everybody, but high levels can mean that your airways are inflamed — a possible sign of asthma.

Your doctor may send you for FeNO testing to diagnose asthma, evaluate a chronic cough, or see how well your medications are treating your asthma. Comparing FeNO results over several visits can be an effective way to make sure you’re getting the right medications in the right amounts to keep you breathing. A respiratory therapist will guide the patient through the FeNO test in Fauquier Hospital's pulmonary function laboratory.

The test is quick and easy to perform.
