Students Offer Cooking Demo to Highlight Warrenton Farmers Market

Tiana Ramos works with her mom Natalie Ramos, who is the director of Nutrition Services for Fauquier Hospital.
Nina Quiles brushes pesto sauce on homemade pizza dough.

Tiana Ramos, Blair Houska, Nina Quiles, Ben Musser show off their cooking skills.

Every Wednesday at 12 noon, the folks in the Bistro on the Hill at Fauquier Hospital dish up a short cooking demonstration, highlighting the foods available in the farmers market that day. (The Warrenton Farmers Market is a just a cantalope's throw away in the Bistro parking lot, every Wednesday, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.)

Several times this summer, chef Tony DeWalt has handed over the culinary reins to Jr. Volunteers who have been helping out in the Bistro this summer. Last Wednesday, Tiana Ramos, Blair Houska, Nina Quiles and Ben Musser handled the demo, preparing, three tasty appetizers for a hungry audience. Tiana prepared fruit kabobs, using fruit and preserves from the farmers market; Blair made the accompanying sauce; Nina prepared fresh pesto pizza and Ben showed how to make a beef and scallion roll up. (All of them were delicious, but samples of the beef dish went exceeding fast, mostly because of me. Yum!)

The students not only prepared great food, but had the opportunity to demonstrate the techniques they've learned in front of a friendly audience. All the kids agreed it was a great experience.

Personally, I'm eager to see what they cook up next week.
