Fauquier Health Recognized for "Best Hospital IT Department"

Fauquier Hospital was recently recognized as an industry leader by Healthcare IT News, earning the title, “Where to work: Best Hospital IT Departments.” Nationwide, 272 hospitals of all sizes were nominated, and 10,683 hospital information technology employees completed surveys about their organizations. Fauquier Hospital was chosen as one of the top 25 hospitals in the country for its IT department.

Donna Staton, Chief Information Officer at Fauquier Health (shown above), says she couldn’t be more proud of her department. “Every day, quality healthcare becomes more and more dependent on secure, reliable information technology. At Fauquier Health, IT includes everything from the mandatory push toward electronic medical records, to helping hands-on physicians and nurses use technology to provide better patient care. It’s a fast-moving target that requires the smartest, most unflappable staff to keep up. Luckily, we’ve got that.”

The goal of the Best IT Department survey was to determine what characteristics distinguish the best hospital IT departments. To do that, employees graded their departments across seven categories: day-to-day work, IT team, management, hospital leadership, workplace culture, training and development and compensation.
The IT departments with the highest survey rankings will be profiled in a special report, distributed with Healthcare IT News in print and also published online. The research for this project was performed by an independent research firm.

Charlotte Robey, RN, a manager in Fauquier Health’s IT Department, has a few ideas about what makes Fauquier Health’s IT Department among the best. “Our interview process is rigorous; all members of the department have an opportunity to participate in the new hire selection process. Our motto is ‘hire for aptitude and attitude.’ We believe that skills can be taught, but a cultural fit is paramount to the success of the team. This approach has served us well and we have a strong and cohesive team as a result.”

Car Control Clinic for New Drivers a Lifesaver

I just posted the calendar of events for Fauquier Health for October, but wanted to call particular attention to the Care Control Clinic for New Drivers. I went through this course with my son when he was 16. It was awesome. He is 21 now and has never had an accident; there have been several occassions that he has used the skills used in the class to avoid serious consequences.

This class is particularly on my mind today, since my daughter has a newly minted learner's permit, and we experienced our first near-death experience with her at the wheel this weekend. Fortunately, her alert dad saved the day, and we all survived the scare with nothing but a few tears.

If she had already taken this course, I feel certain the close call could have been avoided. Here are the details.

Am I Having a Stroke? Dr. Kristin Williams Talks About Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms of stroke and/or TIA (transient ischemic attack) can include weakness, numbness, dizziness, vision problems or headache, even unconsciousness. How do you know when having one or more of these symptoms requires immediate emergency care? Neurologist Kristin Williams will clarify those questions during a Fauquier Health-sponsored lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18. The event will be held at the Marshall Community Center at 4133-A Rectortown Road.

Dr. Williams, of Fauquier Health Neurology, will explain the differences between a TIA and a stroke, and the signs and symptoms of both. She will discuss the latest diagnostic tools and treatment options available, and what you should do if you think you or a loved one is having a TIA or a stroke.

Go to www.fauquierhealth.org to register for the free lecture, or call 540-316-3588.
